Effectiveness of Maternal Influenza Immunization in Mothers and Infants. For the
first time, a clinical trial has shown that pregnant women who receive the influenza
vaccine provide immunity to their newborns as well. Babies whose mothers took the
flu vaccine had a 63 percent reduction in influenza compared with the controls, and
a 29 percent reduction in rates of respiratory illness with fever. The vaccine is
not licensed for infants younger than 6 months, but is recommended by the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention for all pregnant women. View the article

CDC recently developed a Vaccine Information Statement
to use when multiple vaccines are given to infants.
A handout is attached that addresses questions
concerning the use of the recently published multi-vaccine VIS. CDC has also posted an
FAQ on the
multi-vaccine VIS (Vaccine Information Statement).
In Michigan, it is important that vaccine recipients, their parents, or their legal representatives be
given the Michigan versions of VIS because they include information about the Michigan Care Improvement
Registry (MCIR). By state law in Michigan, parents must be informed about MCIR. Vaccine Information
Statements that are obtained from other sources (e.g., from the CDC or IAC websites) do not
contain information about MCIR.
May 2007 -- Immunization information for adult patients can now be entered into Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR). Click here to learn about this and other new MCIR features.
